Preschool Recipes for Fun

By: Rachel Paxton

All preschoolers love arts and crafts activities. With a little preparation, you can save money and have fun by making your own paste, playdough, and finger paints for all your preschooler's craft projects. Let your child help you measure and stir for a fun learning activity!

Finger Painting

1/2 c. cornstarch
1 1/2 tbsp. sugar
1/2 tsp. salt
1 c. cold water
Food coloring

In a medium sauce pan, mix all the ingredients together. Cook over low heat 10 to 15 minutes, stirring until mixture is smooth and thick. Cool. Separate into storage containers and add food coloring as desired.

Pudding Finger Painting

Pudding
Vinyl tablecloth

This activity is fun for all, and safe for young children who can’t help but put their fingers in their mouth. Cover a table with a vinyl tablecloth. Put some pudding at each child’s place. Let them play!

Homemade Paste

1/2 c. flour
Cold water

Add some cold water to the 1/2 cup flour until it is as thick as cream. Simmer and stir on stove for 5 minutes. Store in refrigerator in an airtight container when not in use. Boiled paste lasts longer and sticks better than no-cook paste.

Playdough

2 c. flour
1 c. salt
4 tsp. cream of tartar
2 c. water with food coloring
2 tbsp. vegetable oil

Mix all ingredients together in a non-stick sauce pan. Cook over medium heat until mixture becomes a hard ball. Knead while warm for a smoother consistency. Recipe can easily be doubled or cut in half.

Flubber

1 1/2 c. warm water
2 c. white school glue
1 1/3 c. warm water
3 tsp. Borax
Food coloring

Mix 1 1/2 cups warm water, glue, and food coloring together. In a separate bowl, mix 1 1/3 cups warm water and Borax together. Pour the glue mixture into the Borax mixture and take out of the bowl to knead until flubber is soft and consistent in form. Store in Ziploc bag or tightly sealed container. This stuff is really fun!

Homemade Bubble Solution

1 c. water
2 tbsp. light corn syrup
1/3 c. dishwashing liquid

Combine all ingredients. Mix solution well and allow to sit for 1 hour before using. Cover and label any leftover solution and store in the refrigerator.

Seven Craft Ideas For Teens

By: Audrey Okaneko

Teens are incredibly creative. I have always loved seeing the creations of my own kids.

Here are several ideas that teens can have fun with:

1. Make your own lip gloss. By adding kool-aid powder to Vaseline, you can create several “flavors” of lip gloss. Melt the Vaseline in the microwave. Try it 30 seconds at a time. Add the kool-aid and microwave one more time, again 30 seconds. Mix and then allow to cool. Once it’s cool enough to touch, move the Vaseline into its final storage container and allow to cool completely.

2. Wrapping paper and gift tags. Rubber stamps can create the most magnificent wrapping paper and gift tags. We use both ink pads and also pens on our stamps. The white shiny wrapping paper and gift tags can be bought through a paper supplier. We actually buy small cards and then punch holes in them, for gift tags. With corner punchers you make wonderful borders on the gift cards. We also enjoy making greeting cards with rubber stamps.

3. Candy plants. Start with a pot. Paint or decorate to your liking. Put styrofoam in the bottom of the pot. Now build the plant with an assortment of candy, wire and sticks. You can also add paper flowers. Use hard candies or chocolate kisses to cover the styrofoam.

4. Teens love to create clothing. Sewing fabric onto the bottom of jeans, or the pockets of jeans can create hours of fun.

5. Teens love to scrapbook. My own daughter can sometimes take enough photos in one day for an entire album. They can scrapbook any activity or club they belong to. They can also take photos at sports games and scrapbook those. The ideas for a teen and a scrapbook are endless.

6. Knitting and crocheting. You can find thousands of free patterns on the internet. Teens can make everything from purses, to boxes, to clothing. With string, instead of yarn, you can make bedspreads and desk decorations. With rug yarn, you can create a rug for your bathroom or bedroom.

7. Bulletin boards to hang on the wall. My daughter loves her bulletin boards. Buy a simple wood frame board. The wood can be painted or decorated to the teens liking. Photos or poems or even homework can be put up on the bulletin board once complete.

This is just a small sampling of the various crafts you can suggest to your teens.

FREE Scout Crafting ideas!

These vibrant sticks are banded with six colors, one for each letter in the word friend. Campers can make these trinkets for one another and wear them around their necks as a token of their camp-forged bonds.

CRAFT MATERIALS:
Square wooden chopsticks
Wire snips or sturdy scissors
Acrylic paint, 6 colors
Cotton swabs
Fine-point permanent marker
Cord or string

Time needed: About 1 Hour

1. To make one, cut a 3-inch-long section from a chopstick. Use cotton swabs to paint 6 different-color stripes around the stick.

2. Let the paint dry, then write a message on the stick with the marker. Tie a length of cord tightly around the top of the stick and give it to your friend.
